Plans released for Shenton Park Hospital redevelopment

Posted On January 19, 2016

The Western Australian government has released proposed plans for the Shenton Park hospital redevelopment.

Minister for Lands, Terry Redman, said the 15.8 hectare site of the former hospital was decommissioned in 2014 and will be redeveloped into a residential community.

"Projections show that by 2050, Perth's population will reach 3.5 million people and the State government is working hard to ensure the availability of land for jobs and land for current and future West Australians," Redman said.

"The proposed plans for the development reflect the culture, history and existing landscape of the site, while providing for a range of modern housing options that will also attract new residents to the area.”

The decision to turn the facility into a residential community followed an extensive stakeholder engagement.

Minister for Planning, John Day, said the Shenton Park Hospital Redevelopment Improvement Scheme would guide the development.

"The scheme will ensure the co-ordinated development of this new urban community including high-quality design, land use, public amenity, essential services and private sector investment," Day said.

"The site's proximity to well serviced public transport links, including the Shenton Park train station, make it an ideal location for appropriate density. A development of this type will go a long way to accommodating our growing population while providing people with housing diversity and choice.”

Two portions of land will be leased for the development of new patient accommodation facilities.
