Community groups are being encouraged to access State government funding for the construction of innovative waste management and recycling infrastructure.
Minister for the Environment, Albert Jacob, said the Community Grants Scheme supported community projects aimed at reducing waste generation.
"Effective waste management is everyone's responsibility and I encourage all community groups looking to implement projects in this area to submit an application," he said.
"Since 2008, the Community Grants Scheme has provided more than $1.1 million to more than 100 community groups.”
Grants are available for up to $20,000 for individual projects and form part of the Waste Authority’s Community Grants Scheme.
The State government's waste strategy target aims to divert 65 per cent of metropolitan waste from landfill by 2020.
"This funding has helped many projects with worthy environmental and social objectives to get off the ground," she said.
Previous projects include a community-managed garden for organic waste and a waste education workshop.
Applications for the scheme close in March 2016.
