Stage two of the Exmouth Boat Harbour upgrades have begun, with the site being prepared for construction.
Minister for Transport, Dean Nalder, said a majority of the planning and design works have been completed.
"Once completed, Exmouth Boat Harbour will be better equipped to meet growing demand from recreational and commercial users in the region," Nalder said.
The new facilities will increase oil and gas capacities in the Exmouth and the Gascoyne regions.
The contract for the on-site civil works has been awarded to WBHO Infrastructure Pty Ltd.
The $18.275 million upgrade is expected to create up to 72 jobs during construction as part of the Royalties for Regions investment.
Minister for Regional Development, Terry Redman, said the upgrade would encourage the development of new jobs.
"As the largest harbour in the region, the upgrade recognises the important role Exmouth has to play in supporting the growing maritime industry in the resource-rich Pilbara region," Redman said.
The major works for the upgrade are yet to be awarded.
