Upgrades have begun to redevelop the 30-year-old Mandurah Forum shopping centre to the tune of $300 million.
Western Australian Premier, Colin Barnett, said the project would create a significant employment within the area.
"The Mandurah Forum shopping centre is set to become the largest major regional retail hub south of the Perth metropolitan area," Barnett said.
"This project is an excellent example of how the State government's comprehensive planning policies are changing complex retail developments to better serve community needs through a range of land uses."
The project aims to double the size of the shopping centre’s retail floor space to 71,000 square metres.
Minister for Planning, Donna Faragher, said the local population is expected to more than double over the next 35 years.
"The government's draft strategic plan Perth and Peel@3.5million provides a framework for managing the projected population growth in these regions," Faragher said.
The development will include the addition of an extra two department stores and 150 small specialty stores.
The local population is expected to grow to 1.2 million by 2050.
