The Western Australian government has announced the completion of the $5.1 million Kununurra airstrip upgrade.
Minister for Transport, Dean Nalder, said the Kununurra runway was due for repair works.
"A runway evaluation study revealed an upgrade was needed to strengthen the airstrip to better accommodate current and future aircraft traffic," Nalder said.
The airstrip was built in the 1960s’ and had shown signs of deterioration and inconsistencies in pavement surface.
The project was funded as part of the state government’s Regional Airports Development Scheme.
Minister for Regional Development, Terry Redman, said the airport played a vital role in supporting regional growth.
"This upgrade will provide greater opportunities for industry, tourism and economic development in regional Western Australia," Redman said.
"Royalties for Regions is making a difference with its support of projects such as this to ensure the sustainability of our regional communities."
The grant program is delivered by the Department of Transport.
