Hon John Day BSc BDSc MLA
Planning Minister John Day today released the final Midland Master Plan that will guide the area’s growth as a strategic metropolitan centre with more housing, jobs and community spaces.
Mr Day said the plan, released at the Swan Economic Forum and Expo this morning, would set a long-term vision for Midland’s growth and would help bring forward developments that would deliver real social, economic and environmental benefits to the area.
The plan proposes almost 7,000 new dwellings, more than 155,000 square metres of office and retail space, and about 200,000sqm of civic and cultural spaces.
“Midland is a strategic metropolitan centre servicing Perth’s north-eastern corridor, the Perth Hills and rural Wheatbelt communities,” the Minister said. “This plan will ensure a co-ordinated approach to Midland’s development.
“The vision of creating a medical and education centre in and around the Midland Workshops precinct is now becoming a reality with Curtin University’s new campus and medical school to join the GP Super Clinic and the new Midland Hospital, which is nearing completion.”
The plan also includes a relocated train and bus transit station. It promotes a more connected town centre, including enhancements to pedestrian and cycle networks as well as roads and key streets.
Mr Day said the North-East Sub-Region was expected to need an extra 100,000 plus homes and jobs by 2050 to accommodate an anticipated population increase of 450,590 (currently 209,156). This master plan would help the sub-region to realise this.
“Construction will commence in the coming months on a residential development surrounding Railway Square in The Workshops, incorporating 70 apartments and an activated ground level with shops and cafes,” he said.
The Lloyd Street underpass will improve connectivity in the area for vehicles and pedestrians and will allow emergency vehicles unimpeded access to the hospital. The land in and around the former saleyards site is slated for development of new bulky goods, light commercial and associated manufacturing businesses.
The draft Redevelopment Scheme and Design Guidelines for Midland have also been released for public comment for 60 days.
