Minister for Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering; Sport and Recreation

  • Local sport boosted with $3.3 million allocated to important Broome sporting initiatives
  • Projects to support healthy, active communities; local jobs; and local small businesses

Minister for Sport and Recreation Mick Murray today met with the Shire of Broome to discuss the region's sporting needs, and confirm over $3 million funding for five important local grassroots sporting projects.

The McGowan Government will fulfil its election commitment to upgrade and expand the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre's (BRAC) multipurpose outdoor courts.

Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer campaigned tenaciously for these upgrades, and successfully secured funding for the important project in 2017. The $1.94 million allocation will weatherproof the courts, and improve seating and lighting.

Other projects recently funded through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, include $85,000 for the construction of a local pump track, $32,100 for lighting at the Broome Bowling Club, and $18,000 to upgrade storage facilities at the Broome Squash Club. This comes after a $1.25 million investment into the recently completed Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre refurbishment.

While in Broome, the Minister also met with a number of local sport, seniors and ageing and volunteering stakeholders, and toured local facilities.

The Broome Volunteer Resource Service, which links potential volunteers with agencies within their interest area, hosted a volunteer morning tea where local volunteers were able to meet the minister.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation; Volunteering; Seniors and Ageing Minister Mick Murray:

"The State Government is committed to investing in Broome sporting facilities to not only boost participation in grassroots sport, but provide a shot in the arm to local economies by supporting local jobs.

"Government investment in country areas provides work for tradespeople, often supporting local small business.

"Five facility projects share in $3 million in State Government funding, ensuring high quality facilities for the Kimberley region.

"Local member Josie Farrer knows how important quality sporting and community-focused services are.

"That's why she had the foresight to call for the important upgrades to the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre. Good local members know what their communities need."

Comments attributed to Member for Kimberley, Josie Farrer MLA:

"Since being in Parliament, I have expressed the passion that Kimberley people have for sport. We have some very talented sportspeople here with an amazing climate, which allows us to play all year round.

"Not only that, we have needed other activities for our children to enjoy such as the pump track. The facilities in the Kimberley have needed an upgrade for some time and finally, with our Labor Government in power, we have secured the funds to achieve this.

"These funds will also create employment for local people and as we know, local jobs for local people have been scarce in the past and we are finally getting them back."
