Quay contract awarded for inlet construction

Posted On December 20, 2012

  • Leighton Broad wins $200million managing contract to build inlet
  • Elizabeth Quay to bring the city and river together again
  • Construction of inlet and public spaces complete by mid-2015

Premier Colin Barnett and Planning Minister John Day today announced the major construction contract for Elizabeth Quay had been awarded to a partnership between Leighton Contractors and Broad Construction Services (WA).

Mr Barnett said the $200million contract would include construction of the new 2.7ha inlet; creation of future development sites and new internal roads; and the delivery of high-quality parks, promenades and an island, with a connecting bridge, by mid-2015.

“This is the final and most important contract to complete construction of Elizabeth Quay and deliver a new world-class waterfront precinct for Perth,” the Premier said.

“The appointment of a managing contractor adds to a year of major achievements with more than $55million of construction and supply contracts awarded, significant works underway on site and the release of the first lots to market for a premier hotel and residential development.”

Mr Day said Leighton Broad would now develop a detailed works program, with works to relocate services, remove contaminants from the area and build new roads, scheduled to begin in May next year.

“Inlet construction will commence in mid-2013, starting with excavation on the northern side of Riverside Drive, with the bulk of inlet excavation due for completion in 2014,” the Minister said.

“I would like to thank John Holland and Brookfield Multilpex/Georgiou for the extremely high-quality submissions received and their participation in the process.”

The Premier said Elizabeth Quay was one of a number of projects that would help to meet Perth’s needs as it continued to grow into a contemporary, international city.

“With Perth’s population forecast to grow to 2.35million people by 2026, it is important to build the city’s capacity and create a network of new destinations for people to enjoy,” he said.
