Third Avenue Bridge replacement underway

Posted On November 9, 2015

Works are underway to replace the 105-year-old Third Avenue Bridge in Mount Lawley.

Minister for Transport, Dean Nalder, said the upgrade would improve safety and efficiency on the local road network.

"Replacing this century-old bridge with a new, contemporary structure will not only ensure it meets current safety standards, but will improve traffic flow during peak periods," Nalder said.

BMD Constructions Ltd was awarded the $9.1 million contract to demolish and replace the old timber bridge.

The new 20 metre bridge will be able to cater for a higher load capacity, with plans to build an additional second lane.

The cycle and pedestrian path has also been placed through an underpass, with a new footpath linking between Railway Parade and Whatley Crescent.

The project began with the replacement of Seventh Avenue Bridge in Maylands, which opened to traffic in May 2015.

The bridge is part of a $22 million project to improve safety and efficiency on the local road network.

The project is expected to be complete late 2016.
